Upgrading A Peacock

Back in August, I bought this peacock art piece from Target along with some other pieces for the upstairs bathroom. This bathroom is eventually going to get gutted and remodeled, so I thought "hey why not venture outside my comfort level and put in fun coral colored things? It's only temporary afterall..."

Joke's on me.

The coral color cheered the space for a couple months, but it's not great to see long term. At least not for me. Everyone has their own personal style, and mine happens to fall in the cooler color scheme- blues, greens, purples, and occasionally the splash of color.

The coral was wearing on me, and the bad lighting in the bathroom didn't help.

Anyway, I upgraded the rest of the bathroom, but that's a different process.

This post is because I LOVE that peacock, but not so much the colors used in it.

So instead of giving up on him, I ventured into painting him.

Here's the before photo (as seen on Target's website)

Since I gravitate towards blues and greens, I decided a light teal/light blue is what I'd use for where the coral currently is. I mixed up some acrylic paints that I already have to get the color I was hoping for.

Here's a few process photos (from my instagram story, because that's apparently the only photos I took)

I had to paint over a majority of the background a few times to get the coral completely covered, and I had to cover the original white headdress things and recreate them (I don't know the technical term for his little head details and I'm feeling too lazy to look them up, but you get the point)

I also embellished his neck feathers to give a little more texture.

And then I sponged the black onto the frame. It took awhile, and could have covered better, but it did the trick.

Then I went back over his facial details because the original was an off-white that looked a bit dingy in comparison once everything was changed to blue, and the headdress details were updated.

I'm pretty happy with how it turned out and definitely a lot more confident about customizing store-bought art now.
